Now, one year later, the latest report—AI in Project Management: 2025 and Beyond—offers a timely reflection on the progress, challenges, and future trajectory of AI adoption in the field.
This report was produced by a global initiative led by the PMI-Sweden Chapter, in collaboration with 27 PMI chapters, contributions from 34 project managers, and insights from over 2,300 professionals across 129 countries. It represents a truly global perspective on how AI is impacting project management, balancing both practical realities and aspirational visions for the future.

1️⃣ Key Challenges in AI Adoption
Despite AI’s rapid evolution, its full integration into project management remains a work in progress. Five critical challenges persist:
🔹 The AI Training Gap – Over 40% of project managers still lack formal AI training, underscoring the need for structured upskilling initiatives. PMI has responded with AI-focused courses and workshops, but organizations must prioritize continuous learning.
🔹 Leadership Trust & Resistance – While 60% of project managers are eager to innovate with AI, only 30% believe their leadership is ready to support AI implementation. To bridge this trust gap, companies like Accenture and IBM are appointing Chief AI Officers and AI Task Forces.
🔹 AI’s Limited Impact on Soft Skills – While AI excels at automating tasks and optimizing workflows, it struggles with stakeholder management, negotiation, and team leadership—areas where human intuition and emotional intelligence remain essential.
🔹 Slower AI Adoption in Agile & Hybrid Methodologies – Unlike traditional project management frameworks, Agile teams have been slower to embrace AI due to the need for adaptable, non-rigid AI solutions. However, tools like Jira are beginning to integrate AI-powered sprint planning and backlog prioritization.
🔹 Early-Stage AI Maturity – While AI is making strides in risk management and predictive analytics, only 22% of project management organizations have fully integrated AI into their operations, highlighting its infancy in the field.

🌍 Africa – AI is accelerating project tracking and decision-making, with South Africa’s AI sector expected to grow by 16.7% annually. However, digital infrastructure gaps and a shortage of PMI-certified professionals remain barriers.
🌏 Asia – The region’s AI adoption is booming, driven by investments in robotics, machine learning, and healthcare applications. China, Vietnam, and the UAE are leading the charge with government-backed AI initiatives.
🌏 Europe – The EU has introduced the first legally binding AI treaty, ensuring transparency and safety. Meanwhile, AI-driven project management is growing at a rate of 15% annually, fueled by predictive analytics and automation.
🌎 North America – With a projected AI-driven project management market of $1.88 billion by 2030, North America continues to lead in AI investments. However, challenges around workforce reskilling and ethical AI adoption remain.
🌎 Latin America – Brazil’s $4.07 billion AI plan aims to achieve technological autonomy, while Mexico’s AI project management market is on track to grow at 24.2% annually. AI-driven productivity and efficiency gains are key regional priorities.
🌏 Oceania – AI adoption in Australia and New Zealand is accelerating, with government-backed initiatives supporting its integration into finance, healthcare, and logistics. The market is projected to reach $16.85 billion by 2030.
